Can anyone identify this plant please?
Hi Joseluis! This is Solandra maxima, also known as cup of gold vine, golden chalice vine, or Hawaiian lily. From maximus, Latin for largest, a reference to the very large flowers of this species.
It grows in dry-to-moist forests in open areas in Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. The flowers are fragrant at night, which attracts pollinating bats.
The extract from this species is said to be used for its hallucinogenic effects in ceremonies of the Huichol people from Mexico. All parts of the plant are poisonous, though Solandra maxima is a relative of tobacco, tomatoes and potatoes. 🙂
Maria, your help is greatly appreciated!
