How to check if asparagus is fresh or old?

Hi friends! I’ve just recently started to add asparagus into my diet and I like it. But I am not really sure how to recognize if asparagus is fresh or old when buying it at the market or in the shop. Are there any tips to easily see how fresh the asparagus is.. Thanks!

Hi Traveler! It’s quite easy. Just look for straight, firm stalks with dark green or purple tips. I would recommend to choose stalks the same size so they will cook evenly. Use it within two or three days. If you’d like to store your asparagus for a couple of days, just wrap the stalks in moist paper towels and keep in the refrigerator.

Asparagus spears should be firm and straight. When you bend the spear, it should be brittle and “crack”. Asparagus stalks should be firm but tender. Check the tips too. Mainly, they should be closed tightly. If the tips are yellowish or dried out, the asparagus is too old, so look for dark green or purple tinge on the tips. Don’t buy asparagus with flowers.
