How to recognize a real saffron or a synthetic saffron?
Hi, Kathie! If you put a thread of real saffron in your mouth and it feels sweet, then it’s fake.
When you place saffron threads in cold water for a few minutes will color the water and come out still looking like the original saffron thread. If the color washes out and the thread when taken out has faded or completely lost its color, then it’s fake.
If your squeeze saffron and fat is remained in between fingers, saffron is pure and original which is the most appropriate method of distinguishing saffron.
Saffron should smell sweet, with a floral-type aroma.

Remember, the highest quality of saffron is deep red with orange tips. It does not have any white or yellow spots.
When you soak saffron it in water, see how long it takes for the colour to change and the sweet aroma to spread. Real saffron will at least take 15 minutes for these to happen while fake, colored saffron will give out the color immediately without much aroma.
